So we went in for our 2nd ultrasound today to confirm the yolk was there and to hopefully hear a heartbeat. They were really busy and we had to wait about 40 minutes to be seen. Once we went in, we got started right away. As soon as he started the ultrasound, I saw what my gut had been telling me! I saw 2 sacs!!! The Dr. didn’t say anything and went over to the right. He said right away that he saw a heartbeat. I felt the biggest sigh of relief. Then my Dr. said, “ I might have a surprise for you!”…. Right away I said, “There’s 2!?!?!?”. He said yes! He went over to baby number 2 and showed us it’s heartbeat. It was the best feeling in the world! Baby B’s sac is significantly smaller than Baby A’s, but he said it’s the size of the baby that matters, not the sac. Baby A was measuring 6 weeks, 1 day with a heartbeat of 111bpm and Baby B was measuring 6 weeks, 0 days with a heartbeat of 120bpm. This was the absolute best thing in the world!!!
Kevin called his mom at work to tell her and then he had to go back to work. I drove straight to my parents to tell them. My dad greeted me at the door and my mom was right there! My mom said she knew the whole time!:) Here is the email I sent to family and friends:
Hi Everyone,
We went in for our second ultrasound today to make sure the baby was developing and to hopefully hear the heartbeat. Everything looks great and we got to hear the heartbeats… Yes, you read that right… HEARTBEATS! There are 2 babies!!! Our intuition was correct. Last week we believe Baby B was hiding behind Baby A. They are each in their own sac and doing great! Baby B’s sac is significantly smaller than Baby A’s, but he/she is still doing just fine. Our Doctor said it’s the size of the baby that matters over the size of the sac. Baby A is measuring 6 weeks, 1 day and Baby B is measuring 6 weeks, 0 days. I’m 6 weeks, 2 days so they aren’t too far behind. Their heartbeats are 111 bpm and 120 bpm. Baby B was beating a little stronger!
We don’t know if they are fraternal or identical yet. If they are the same sex, we won’t know if they are identical until they are born. I’m not quite sure how you can even tell newborns apart at that age:) If they are a different sex then of course we will know they are fraternal.
We officially graduated from our fertility specialist to an OB! It’s very bittersweet because we loved my doctor. He was the best anyone could ask for and we are really sad to leave him. At the same time, we are happy we are moving onto the next step.
We feel blessed to be pregnant with twins after going through this whole process. We were already high risk, so having twins puts us at an even greater risk. It’s still very early on in the pregnancy so we are very cautious. We both feel really good about this though and just plan to focus 100% on the babies and make sure they continue to remain healthy. We will hopefully get to see them again in 2 weeks! We aren’t sure of the due date yet but we are guessing the end of January is when they will be coming. We’ll keep you all updated as we continue to get updates.
